A humorous look at ramblin' and rovin' south of the border. If you're interested in the perspective of a boots-on-the-ground, non-gringolandia-living-expat in Mexico. . .join me. I will continually ask the question. . .is there life after EMS?
I don't know the real name of those scrubbers, but here in town, they're called piñas. I have a piña to clean the bathroom, and another for doing laundry! :P
ReplyDeleteThe scrubber is called an estropajo and it is made of fibers called ixtle that come from a plant called lechuguilla (Agave lechuguilla) which grows mostly in the desert areas of Mexico. Leslie is correct also. I have heard them called piña and they get that name because lechuguilla is a plant that looks like a normal agave only smaller and the thick part of the stem called the piña grows below the ground. The plant grows mostly where there is a lot of limestone in the soil. In the state of Jalisco they make an alchoholic drink out of lechuguilla called Raicilla (rye-SEE-yuh).
ReplyDeleteI KNEW you had a few of these little gems around your house! I've never heard what they're called before, but I'll ask around here and see too.
ReplyDeleteOh, Bob, thanks so much for your post! Very interesting. Estropajo, I have heard that word, that's what Tere calls it.
ReplyDeleteYou have the best little tidbits of info!
