I don't know the real name of those scrubbers, but here in town, they're called piñas. I have a piña to clean the bathroom, and another for doing laundry! :P
ReplyDeleteThe scrubber is called an estropajo and it is made of fibers called ixtle that come from a plant called lechuguilla (Agave lechuguilla) which grows mostly in the desert areas of Mexico. Leslie is correct also. I have heard them called piña and they get that name because lechuguilla is a plant that looks like a normal agave only smaller and the thick part of the stem called the piña grows below the ground. The plant grows mostly where there is a lot of limestone in the soil. In the state of Jalisco they make an alchoholic drink out of lechuguilla called Raicilla (rye-SEE-yuh).
