Abarrotes - Mexico's Neighborhood Mom 'n Pop Stores June 2010

There is one on every street.
Sometimes one on every corner,
but few can measure up to Don Chuy's abarrote.

You can buy 1 aspirin.
Or 1 diaper.
Or 1 razor.
I love that!

He is the eyes and ears of the neighborhood.

Want fresh tortillas?
See Chuy.
Looking for a house to rent in the neighborhood?
See Chuy.
Need someone to mend your jacket?
See Chuy.
Or his wife, or his daughters.

Recently, Chuy's was closed!
¡Hijole!
That's just wrong!

Grandpa died.

Heeeeeeeerrrrre's Chuy. . .

And he has EVERYTHING. . .

Note the name of his store:  Cold Beer
Chuy didn't just fall off of the pineapple truck!

  1. These stores always remind me of a little store between my grade school and home. We stopped in almost every afternoon to buy a stick of licorise each. It was grubby. But it was ours.

  2. We have 3 of these lovely stores! :) It's amazing what they actually have. Even if you don't see it, just ask and I'm sure they'll have it! :)

    Love it.

  4. Makes me wonder how supermarkets could ever overrun these little tiendas :)

  5. Glad to meet Chuy through this post! Sometimes I think the owners enjoy their work because they can be at the center of all the neighborhood gossip. And the sodas etc. piled in the aisles!

  7. We call them pulperias here in Honduras. Same concept. One cigarette, one egg, etc. Gotta love it!

  8. I think its so amazing how they can seriously have EVERYTHING. Like Leslie said if you dont see it just ask. I once saw a kid come in and ask for a shoe string, yes only one. And Im like why would the place that sells the necessities have those. And oh yes she pulled a bundle of new shoestrings out and let him pick one. I love it.
